Seong Sanggyu / Then aged 19 Presidential Citation (Mar. 1, 2020) [Dohwa. Goheung county/ From May 8, 1923 to Feb. 3, 1951] In his second grade at Yeosu Public Fisheries School, he led a strike to expel Japanese teachers who discriminated against Korean and to use Korean in the school in November 1942. As he led the movement of refusing to join the Japanese National Labor Unit on November 15, 1942, he got caught by Japanese police and transferred from Suncheon Branch of Prosecutor's Office to Gwangju District Prosecutor's Office. Charged for violating the punishment of the acts of violence, he got harsh torture in jail. Sentenced to suspension of the indictment on January 13, 1943, he got released from prison. After Korea got independence from Japan, he worked for Yeosu Dong (east) Elementary School and Gwangju Fisheries Union Federation.
